HOSPITAL

The Leprosy Mission in India provides Hospital based medical care to the community through its 18 hospitals located across the country in 10 states. The main objective of the hospitals is to provide Christ-centered, comprehensive, compassionate care to the community in general and to those affected by leprosy in particular. The main stay of the medical work is the specialized leprosy referral services for the management of complications of leprosy. This includes diagnosis and treatment of leprosy with MDT, management of reactions, ulcer care, eye care, reconstructive surgery, foot care and counseling. In addition, the hospitals also provide a wide range of general medical services based on the needs of the community they serve. These services include the specialties of Ophthalmology, Dermatology, General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopedics, Plastic Surgery, Dental services and Community Medicine. The role of the hospitals, therefore, is twofold for those affected by leprosy – provide high quality general medical care which is beyond the reach of the leprosy affected especially those with deformities and provide quality specialized leprosy referral services.

Of the 18 hospitals, 16 are equipped with inpatient facilities with an overall bed strength of 1089 beds of which 777 are for leprosy, 188 for general diseases and 89 for eye care. The overall bed occupancy rate is around 82%. These hospitals are supported by around 900 staff including Specialist and Junior Doctors, Nurses, Administrators, Technicians and others.

The outpatient and inpatient services are fully computerized in all the hospitals.
